Chilika Lake is a beautiful natural wonder of India. Few people know this is the country’s largest coastal lagoon. Not only that, but it is also the second-largest brackish-water lagoon in the world, which adds to its surreal appeal and excites travellers. But whenever coastal escapes in India are mentioned, the Instagrammable places in Goa, the palm-lined shores of Kerala, and the quiet sands of the Andamans become a hot topic of discussion. You will not hear Chilika Lake being mentioned enough in this list. This glorious lake is tucked away along Odisha’s eastern coastline, a biodiversity marvel and a haven for nature lovers and photographers.
No doubt there is so much to love here; I fell in love with the serene atmosphere, migratory birds, quiet waters, and the slow-paced life of the Chilika Lake. But in addition to these endless beautiful experiences, some moments completely changed my perception of this lake and of India altogether. This is the most vibrant memory of India that I will always carry with me. If you want to learn more about Chilika Lake and my experience here, keep reading this blog.
Surreal Beauty: An Introduction to the Chilika Lake
Chilika Lake is not just a body of water; it is a whole ecosystem. Stretching across three districts of Odisha, this lake is a brackish body of water, mixing fresh water and seawater. Not only that, the lake is fed by rivers that connect to the Bay of Bengal. This is why Chilika Lake is renowned for its biodiversity, home to hundreds of species. The delicate balance of waters and ecosystems here supports an extraordinary range of life, which is always fascinating for tourists.
Even though Chilika Lake is a beautiful coastal escape in India, it is unlike traditional beach destinations. You will not find luxurious beach resorts and promenades here. Its beauty lies in its underrated, slow-paced life and charm. A visit to this lake is all about exploring the fishing villages and the narrow waterways. Also, it is always a surreal sight to witness water and sky blur into one in the open horizon.
My First Impression of Lake Chilika
When I first visited Chilika Lake, I expected it to be chaotic. We all know how chaotic India can be, especially at its iconic landmarks and big cities. One thing I didn’t realise was that, even though this lake is the country’s largest lagoon, it is still a lesser-known attraction. Therefore, when I saw the tranquillity and the stillness of the waters here, I was surprised. The stillness of this lake holds an unmatched charm. The boats here are not rushed and glide softly over the beautiful waters.
Everything about this lake deserves keen observation. The beauty of this lake demands that you sit for a while to observe every little element and experience the magic of this natural wonder. You will see fishermen working quietly and efficiently as the sky changes colour, but their focus remains the same.
I have always loved coastal lagoons. They are much more serene than the sea. The thrashing waves and noise of the sea are not everyone’s cup of tea. But the serenity of the coastal lagoons makes everyone fall in love with them. Or maybe I am biased, since I prefer lagoons to the sea. But whatever it was, I loved my trip to Chilika Lake. The distant surrounding islands, glistening waters, and a quiet atmosphere were enough to make me write this blog about the beautiful lake.
The Unexpected Moment that Made Chilika Lake My Favourite
As soon as I arrived at Chilika Lake, I knew I was going to love it, but an unexpected moment made it my favourite place in India. This moment came just before the sunrise. My partner and I decided to witness a beautiful sunrise at the lake. We arrived early and boarded a boat as the early-morning light peeked through the night. The air was cool, and the water was more still than usual. The serene atmosphere at this time was perfect for relaxing and unwinding.
And then came the perfect moment that is still instilled in my mind, and I know that I will never forget it. This moment is worth truly discussing. As our boat slowed near the channel where the lake and sea meet, the first streaks of pink and gold painted the sky, the sun trying to spread its light as our day began. As if this were not surreal enough, a pod of Irrawaddy dolphins surfaced beside us. They swam calmly as we watched, too stunned to speak.
One of these dolphins stayed for a bit longer as if it were trying to catch the sunlight for longer before going back beneath the surface of the water. It was such a moment of peace and awe that we were lost for words. I didn’t even think to take out my camera and click a beautiful photograph, lost in the surreal sight. This quickly became the most vivid memory of my trip, and I knew I would cherish it forever and tell everyone for years to come, even though I knew my words could never do justice to the mesmerising sight.
Why Did That Moment Mattered So Much?
I have seen dolphins before, but this time was different. This time, there were no crowds making noise and scaring these beautiful creatures away. The serene atmosphere and the absence of spectacle were enough to make this moment unforgettable. We witnessed a marvel of nature without any performance, which makes it all the more worthwhile.
It was at this moment that I realised travel is all about the unexpected. This experience could never be planned for an itinerary. It is a natural wonder that arrives at the right time. The sunrise in the background adds to the surreal beauty of this charming lake. So, if you are planning to visit Chilika Lake soon, make sure to witness a stunning sunrise here. I can assure you that it will alter your brain chemistry.
What to Expect at the Chilika Lake?
Along with serenity and natural beauty, there are numerous other things that you can expect at the Chilika Lake. Here are some things that you must know about this glorious lake.
Wildlife and Biodiversity
This lake is a biodiversity hotspot. We have told you only about the dolphins, but there are so many other species you will have a chance to see here. There are over 200 species of birds that call this lake home.
During the winter, migratory birds arrive at the lake, making it one of the best times for birdwatching here. Nalabana Island, a protected bird sanctuary, becomes a living mosaic of wings, calls, and colour. The waters here teem with rich aquatic life, too.
Boat Rides and Island Hopping

You cannot say you have visited Chilika Lake without taking a boat ride. This is central to the whole experience. Through these rides, you can explore the serene, smaller islands around the lake. The narrow channels and open expanses of water are also worth exploring.
Every route you take for your boat ride, you will be met with a different side of the lake. Some offer serene natural beauty, while others focus on the region’s wildlife. You also get a glimpse of the village life along the coast of this lake while island hopping and going for the boat rides.
Local Villages and Community Life
Chilika Lake is known for its slow-paced life. The shoreline is dotted with beautiful fishing villages. The life of these villages is simple and rooted on the shores. The people here change their lives with the changing waves and seasons. You will get a chance to see fishermen mend nets, children play near boats, and elders share stories, which adds a human depth to the landscape.
Therefore, when you visit Chilika Lake, you realise it is not just about its natural beauty but also promises a culturally immersive experience. When you visit the fishing villages, you ground this lake in lived reality, which elevates the whole experience.
Beyond the Waters: Delicious Food at Chilika Lake
My partner and I are the ultimate foodies. We never like visiting destinations that don’t offer a memorable culinary experience, either. Chilika Lake’s food was a cherry on top of the whole experience. Fresh fish, prawns, and crab dominate local meals, often cooked with minimal spices to let natural flavours shine.
There is nothing like eating delicious seafood by the water. You can enjoy your meal as the boats drift apart into the sea. This is the true authenticity of a coastal escape, adding to the whole experience.
Summing Up
Chilika Lake was the highlight of my trip to India. This was the type of place that I never associated with a bustling country like India. It quickly became my favourite coastal escape for the serenity and exceptional experiences it promises. The sight of the dolphins against a painted sky, with the sunrise in the background, was a turning point for me.
It changed how I viewed not only India but also coastal retreats. This lake is not about endless attractions; it is all about experiencing the slow-paced life and the calm of nature.
